Pneumococcal Pneumonia Can Be Life-Threatening. Here’s What to Know

Blk HlthPneumococcal Pneumonia Can Be Life-Threatening. Here’s What to Know

The American Lung Association and Pfizer are teaming up to help adults protect themselves from pneumococcal pneumonia. The disease causes high fever and breathing problems, leading to around 150,000 hospitalizations annually in the U.S.

People aged 65 and older are more vulnerable, but even seemingly healthy adults can be at risk due to the natural weakening of the immune system with age. Smoking, lung diseases, heart issues, and diabetes increase the risk for those aged 19 and older.

Vaccination is the main defense, especially for those with chronic health conditions and those aged 65 and older. Catherine, an asthma patient, stresses the importance of vaccination to prevent severe consequences.

Besides vaccination, adopting healthy habits like handwashing and avoiding smoking helps prevent pneumococcal pneumonia. Those with chronic illnesses should follow care recommendations.

However, reaching vaccination goals set by the 2025 Vaccines National Strategic Plan is challenging. Current rates, especially among Black and Hispanic/Latino communities, fall short of the targets.

In 2021, vaccination coverage among U.S. adults aged 65 and older was 70.1%, but lower in Black (around 60%) and Hispanic/Latino populations (around 52%). This underscores the importance of at-risk adults taking proactive steps.

Engaging with healthcare professionals, asking questions, and advocating for oneself are crucial steps for those at an elevated risk. Even if previously vaccinated, additional shots may be recommended for enhanced protection.

The message is clear: pneumococcal pneumonia is a serious threat, but by taking proactive measures, individuals can significantly reduce their risk. Consult your healthcare provider today to discuss how to fortify your defenses against this potentially life-altering lung disease.
