EducationMorgan State Rises to Third-Highest Enrollment Amongst HBCUs

The Baltimore public university accomplished record enrollment for its fourth consecutive year.

Morgan State University, a cornerstone of Baltimore’s higher education landscape, has announced record-breaking enrollment for the fourth consecutive year, cementing its position as the third-largest historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the United States. The university reported 10,739 students enrolled for the fall 2024 semester, marking a 9.4% increase from the previous year. The milestone includes the largest freshman class in Morgan State’s history, with 2,369 new students. Of the total student body, nearly 53% are Maryland residents, reflecting the institution’s strong local draw, while the freshman class hails from 41 states and seven countries, showcasing its growing national and global appeal.

Morgan State’s surge in enrollment follows a broader trend of increased interest in HBCUs nationwide. As of September, North Carolina A&T State University retained its position as the largest HBCU, with 14,311 students, followed by Howard University, which reported more than 13,500 students. Morgan’s growth extends to its graduate programs, which now boast 1,712 students—a 14% increase from 2023 and the highest in the university’s history.

“Morgan’s record-breaking enrollment for Fall 2024 is a testament to the growing recognition of the transformative education and opportunities we offer,” said Morgan State President David K. Wilson. He attributed the rise to the efforts of faculty, staff, and alumni in making Morgan a premier destination for students from across the country and the world.

The university’s incoming freshman class reflects its commitment to academic rigor and diversity. Of the 24,414 applications received for the fall semester—96% of which came from prospective freshmen—the average high school GPA was 3.16. President Wilson highlighted the enthusiasm reflected in the record number of applications, describing it as evidence of Morgan’s strong mission and brand appeal.

“Morgan remains committed to empowering students to achieve academic excellence and make meaningful contributions to society,” Wilson added.

The sustained growth at Morgan State mirrors a broader renaissance for HBCUs, which have seen a resurgence in popularity amid increasing awareness of their cultural and historical significance. Enhanced funding, improved facilities, and national conversations about diversity and inclusion have contributed to rising enrollment figures across many HBCUs.

For Morgan State, the challenge moving forward will be to sustain its momentum while expanding resources to support its growing student body. With this milestone, the university not only reinforces its status among the leading HBCUs but also underscores its pivotal role in shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators. As Morgan State continues to break records and set new benchmarks, it remains a vital institution for higher learning and a beacon of Black excellence in Maryland and beyond.
